Software fix

EGR OFF + DTC OFF

Affected system:
EGR / Exhaust Gas Recirculation

What does code P0401 mean?

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) flow insufficient. The ECU detects that the amount of recirculated gas is less than expected for current operating conditions.

Symptoms seen in the workshop

  • MIL on
  • Engine performance loss
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Rough idle
  • Excessive smoke
  • Possible limp mode

Common causes of code P0401

  • EGR valve blocked by carbon deposits (most common cause)
  • Blocked EGR passages
  • Clogged or leaking EGR cooler
  • Faulty EGR position sensor
  • Failed pneumatic or electric valve actuator
  • Vacuum leaks in EGR circuit

Fix by ECU remapping

The remapping solution includes:

1. EGR OFF (calibration): Deactivation of EGR valve control maps — target position, flow rate, actuator PWM and opening logic.

2. DTC OFF (diagnostics): Deactivation of P0401 and associated EGR codes in the diagnostic mask.

⚠️ Important: Disabling the DTC without the correct calibration of the related system (EGR OFF + DTC OFF) is not a valid fix. Both the calibration maps and the diagnostic mask have to be modified.

Frequently asked questions about P0401

What does P0401 mean?
P0401 indicates insufficient EGR flow. It is usually caused by carbon buildup in the EGR valve.
Can EGR be disabled by ECU remapping?
Yes. Professional remapping deactivates EGR control maps and associated DTCs. It is the most reliable and permanent solution.
