Reverting to factory software: when and why
Restoring the original software is one of the services most requested by professional workshops. Not every vehicle that reaches a workshop is in its factory configuration: many have had previous remaps, partial interventions, ECUs cloned from vehicles with different software, or poor-quality modifications. Going back to stock firmware is the first step before any other work.
Typical cases where it is requested
- Vehicle saleThe owner wants to deliver it exactly as it came from the factory.
- Claim at dealership: to prevent them from detecting previous modifications before a warranty intervention.
- Poor quality previous remapping: smoke, high fuel consumption, warning lights on after poorly done tuning.
- cloned ECU from a donor vehicle with slightly different software.
- ECU replaced for a second-hand unit whose software does not exactly match the destination vehicle.
- Preparation for new interventionNew stage, downpipe, etc. Starting from clean software.
- Recovery after a failed attempt DIY tuning that left the file corrupted.
- Cleaning before MOT: return to stock to pass inspection without surprises.

What information we need
To locate the exact original file, the workshop must provide:
- current file extracted of the vehicle (essential as a reference).
- Make, model, year and engine.
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) if available.
- Software version visible on the diagnostic tool (SW/HW part number).
- Whether the ECU is original to the vehicle or has been replaced.
Difference between restoration and DTC management
They are complementary but distinct services. A restore reinstalls the entire firmware from scratch, replacing any previous modifications. DTC management It works on specific diagnostic points without affecting the rest of the firmware. Many workshops combine both approaches: first restoring to stock settings and then applying specific procedures as needed.
Technical process
- The workshop sends the current file extracted from the ECU.
- We identified the exact family and software version.
- We located the corresponding factory file in our inventory.
- We verify integrity and checksum.
- We return the original file ready to flash. Typical turnaround time is under 30 minutes.
- Optionally, we also provide the mappack WinOLS of the vehicle if the workshop requests it (see the service mappack WinOLS/XDF).
