What does code U0121 mean?
Symptoms seen in the workshop
- ABS, ESP and traction control warning lights on
- No speedometer reading on some models
- Cruise control disabled
- Torque or rev limitation on some ECUs that use wheel speed
Common causes of code U0121
- ABS removed or replaced on a competition vehicle
- Faulty ABS module (internal failure is common on some units)
- No power supply: high-current ABS fuse, ground
- Corroded or wet ABS unit connector
- Damaged CAN wiring
Fix by ECU remapping
For competition vehicles without ABS (track use only):
1. Calibration: deactivation in the engine ECU of the functions that depend on the ABS (traction control, wheel-speed-based limits) and, if needed, use of another vehicle speed source.
2. DTC OFF: deactivation of U0121 and associated codes: U0415 and any wheel speed codes stored by the ECU.
On a road vehicle the ABS is mandatory safety equipment: the solution is to repair the module, its power supply or the wiring, never DTC OFF.
⚠️ Important: Disabling the DTC without the correct calibration of the related system (DTC OFF) is not a valid fix. Both the calibration maps and the diagnostic mask have to be modified.
