What does code U0401 mean?
Symptoms seen in the workshop
- Gearbox in limp mode or harsh shifts
- Gearbox or ESP warning light on
- Torque limited in one gear or across the range
- U0401 stored in the TCU or ABS, not in the engine ECU
Common causes of code U0401
- Calibration with torque or limits beyond what the TCU accepts
- Torque messages inconsistent with real torque (indicated versus friction torque)
- ECU of a different variant or coding (engine, gearbox, drivetrain)
- ECU software that does not match the TCU version
- ECU with internal faults sending wrong data
Fix by ECU remapping
ECU remapping solution that corrects the cause:
1. Recalibration: adjusting the torque maps and their CAN messages so they are consistent with real torque and within what the TCU accepts; if needed, adapting the gearbox (TCU) limits together with the ECU.
2. Variant and coding: if the ECU comes from another vehicle, load the variant or coding the other modules expect.
Disabling U0401 in the TCU or ABS is not the solution: it would leave the gearbox working with torque data it does not understand.
⚠️ Important: Disabling the DTC without the correct calibration of the related system (Recalibration) is not a valid fix. Both the calibration maps and the diagnostic mask have to be modified.
