What does code U0101 mean?
Symptoms seen in the workshop
- MIL or gearbox warning light on
- Limp mode / reduced torque
- Cruise control disabled
- No start on some models (the ECU does not receive "P" or "N")
- U0101 stored in other modules too (ABS, cluster, gateway)
Common causes of code U0101
- Automatic-to-manual conversion with the ECU still configured for an automatic gearbox
- TCU removed (gearbox swap) or replaced by an uncoded unit
- TCU in boot mode or without software after an interrupted flash
- Faulty mechatronic unit (DSG, S tronic) that stops communicating
- TCU power or ground supply: fuse, relay, connector
- Damaged CAN wiring between the ECU and the gearbox
Fix by ECU remapping
For manual gearbox conversions, ECU remapping solution:
1. Manual variant recalibration (calibration): configuring the ECU as a manual gearbox, disabling CAN supervision of the TCM, the torque reduction request and the "P"/"N" start permission.
2. DTC OFF: deactivation of U0101 and associated codes: U0402 and P0700.
If the automatic gearbox is still fitted, the problem lies with the TCU or its installation: recover a TCU in boot mode (bench read and write) or repair the mechatronic unit. DTC OFF is no substitute for a TCU that does not work.
⚠️ Important: Disabling the DTC without the correct calibration of the related system (Recalibration + DTC OFF) is not a valid fix. Both the calibration maps and the diagnostic mask have to be modified.
